#5DaysofEquality for same-sex Australian couples honored at 2015 OMMA Awards

This past Monday night, GLAAD was in attendance at the OMMA Awards, held at the Metropolitan Pavilion in New York City. The OMMA Awards honor advertising agencies and campaigns that raise the bar for digital advertising.

#5DaysofEquality, a digital campaign by GLAAD and Razorfish, was nominated and won in the LGBT category for an online campaign that specifically aims to reach the LGBT community. Also nominated in the LGBT category were digital campaigns for Proud Parenting LGBT Family Galleries, created by Proud Parenting, Mattel/Fisher-Price and Gay Ad Network, which focused on the presence of LGBT families on social media; and PRIDE, created by Las Vegas Convention & Vistors Authority and R&R Partners, which hoped to bring more LGBT travelers to Las Vegas.

The #5DaysofEquality campaign began last year in December as a way to celebrate the one year anniversaries of thirty-one same-sex Australian couples who married in December 2013, only to have their marriages revoked by the Australian Federal Government just five days later. GLAAD, with the help of Razorfish, encouraged people around the world to wish the couples happy anniversaries. 

#5DaysofEquality is part of GLAAD's Global Voices program, which seeks to accelerate acceptance for LGBT people around the world.

Using the hashtag #5DaysofEquality, thousands across the globe shared their messages to the couples on social media. 

These tweets and posts were then transcribed by hand onto greeting cards and given to the couples. The campaign was a way to show support for marriage equality in Australia and stand by the idea that "all love should be recognized."

Although the Australian government has yet to make decision on what course of action Parliament will take, the current Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull, has supported marriage equality in the past and has put forth the idea of a national referendum to decide the issue.
