New York, NY, February 20, 2009 – The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) today urged LGBT community members to make their voices heard as part of a growing chorus of public outrage over the New York Post's decision to publish a racist cartoon by Sean Delonas linking the shooting of a chimpanzee in Connecticut with President Obama and the passage of the stimulus package.

The Feb. 18 cartoon depicts police having shot and killed a chimpanzee while making an implied reference to President Obama, saying, "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill." The cartoon has sparked widespread anger and outrage, and community leaders have coordinated ongoing protests of the New York Post.

Sean Delonas has been the subject of GLAAD Calls to Action and has been included in the Best & Worst of National News for his continued juvenile and defamatory treatments of LGBT issues. Most recently, he was named to GLAAD's Worst Defamation of 2008 list.

The New York Post and News Corporation (which also owns Fox News Channel and the Wall Street Journal) have a long history of providing a platform for Delonas' defamatory attacks. GLAAD has compiled a slideshow highlighting a selection of past anti-LGBT Delonas cartoons. (View it here.)

GLAAD is calling on our community members and allies to stand up and join those who are speaking out against the New York Post and News Corp.'s continuing promotion of Sean Delonas' hateful defamation. Demand that News Corp. hold the New York Post and Delonas accountable for their defamatory representations, and that the Post stop providing a platform for such vile, abusive attacks.
