The GLAAD Wrap: Debra Messing's "Smash"hit, Yodeling Lesbian Twins, and the New True Blood Trailer!

This week GLAAD introduces a new Friday column to bring you LGBT-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend. 1) NBC programming is growing a lot more inclusive next season.  The network announced late Wednesday that it has ordered the Glee-style musical show Smash for its fall schedule.  Executive produced by Steven Spielberg and starring former Will & Grace actress Debra Messing, the heavily buzzed about series is set in the world of Broadway musicals and features several major gay characters. . 2) The news got even better last night, when NBC also announced the pickup of The Playboy Club starring out actress Amber Heard.  Set amongst the 60's "bunny" scene, the show's pilot also featured a closeted lesbian bunny named Alice in a marriage of convenience with a gay man who's a compatriot of hers in the pioneering LGBT advocacy group, the Mattachine Society. . 3) Opening this weekend in NYC is the delightful (and GLAAD Media Award nominated) documentary The Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls, about a pair of most-unlikely New Zealand cultural icons; country-music singing, political advocate, comedy sketch performing, yodeling lesbian twins.  Look for it to expand to more screens through the summer. Among the teams braving their way through desserts and across mountains are the Fab 3, which features friendly ex-boyfriends AJ and Ryan. . 7) Filmmaker Michele Josue needs your help reaching her fundraising goal to finish a documentary about childhood friend Matthew Shepard, the aptly title Matt Shepard is a Friend of Mine.  Watch the moving trailer below and visit Michele’s Kickstarter page to help her cross the goal line!
