It Feels Good to Say Thank You
Spanish language media has a powerful place in our society. And in our hearts. Many of us still love and long for the countries we left behind. So when we turn on the television and hear Doctora Polo, Judith Grace or Cristina speaking to us in our language we listen a lot more closely. When we hear these beloved media leaders talk about LGBT people in a way that is fair accurate and inclusive, not just to us but to our dads, moms and abuelitas, it makes a big difference. And when we see someone like Maria Celeste Arrarás wearing purple in honor of Spirit Day, we feel a very personal sense of gratitude.
Unfortunately, we still see stereotypes and the gay or transgender person’s character played as the butt of the joke. But, with the passing of time, we also see more fair, accurate and inclusive representation in Spanish-Language Media, which reaches Latinos in the United States and around the world.
When newspapers, magazines, radio stations and television program include gay or transgender people in their programs in ways that are as respectful and non-stereotypical, that helps to open the hearts and minds of all their viewers. And that, in turn, makes it possible for us to lead lives that are far safer, healthier and happier.
That’s just what this year’s slate of great nominees—and winners—have done. In New York, on March 19, not a lot of awards could be presented onstage but many more were announced. We send heartfelt thanks to all of the great media professionals whose work helps improve the lives of LGBT people—and our many family members and allies around the world.
