LA Times Features Trans Rights Advocacy

On Wednesday, the Los Angeles Times ran a feature article about Mara Keisling and the National Center for Transgender Equality in Washington, D.C.  The article described the gradual progress being made in the U.S. toward securing rights for transgender people – citing the landmark Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act (the first federal law to include protections for trans people), this February’s decision by the U.S. Tax Court to make hormone treatments and sex reassignment surgeries tax-deductible, and increasing support for a fully-inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA). The article also discussed Mara’s path to transgender advocacy, growing up in Pennsylvania, studying government at Harvard, and dedicating herself to social activism in 1999. GLAAD thanks the LA Times for providing such a fair and accurate report on the status of transgender rights and the work of one of the preeminent transgender advocacy groups .
