—Was nominated by President Donald Trump to head the Export-Import Bank, but a bi-partisan group of Senators blocked the confirmation.
—Said he opposes civil marriage equality because he is a “devout man of faith.”
—Refused to pay National Republican Congressional Committee dues over gripes that the party was “actively recruiting homosexual candidates and had supported gay candidates in the past.”
—Twice voted for the discriminatory Federal Marriage Amendment, which would alter the U.S. Constitution to specifically bar same-sex couples from marriage rights; served as cosponsor for later versions of the bill that never came to a vote.
—Attacked families of same-sex couples as both selfish and lesser: “Marriage exists for the well-being of children. It is the only institution that gives kids a mom and a dad. Where do grownups get the right to give their own desires higher priority? If we redefine marriage, it will harm everyone, especially the children. It will legally repudiate the idea that marriage has anything to do with a family, and will legally embrace the idea that marriage is just an arrangement for the convenience of the grownups.
—Voted against hate crimes legislation protecting LGBTQ people.
—Voted against the repeal of the military’s discriminatory “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.
—Cosponsored legislation allowing business owners to deny services to same-sex couples without government recourse.
—Voted against Sexual Orientation Employment Nondiscrimination Act.
—Joined a letter to congressional leaders calling on the Department of Defense to prevent same-sex marriages from taking place on Department of Defense property.
