Being gay was decriminalized in China in 1997, but marriage for same-sex couples is not legal. The votes have been counted and marriage equality is now the law of the land in Ireland. After historically high voter turnout, Irish voters approved a nation-wide referendum that added the following language to the constitution: "marriage may be contracted in accordance with law by two persons without distinction as to their sex."
On Friday, Ireland will become the first country to hold a nation-wide referendum for marriage equality. Ireland isn't the first country to have marriage equality, but many will be watching to see what happens when the question goes before the voters.
