This morning, GLAAD announced the nominees for the 25th Annual GLAAD Media Awards and many of this year's nominees included out characters of color telling important stories and reflecting the true diversity of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.
The People’s Choice Awards, the first televised awards show of the year, aired last night on CBS and several out stars, characters, and LGBT-inclusive series won their categories as voted on by the fans.
When scripted television turns to real-world issues faced by LGBT people for inspiration, they are also helping to educate viewers and foster greater understanding, which studies have shown translates to positive shifts in public opinion. Last year, GLAAD examined the previous ten years of transgender inclusive television episodes, and found that more than half of those tracked were either negative or outright defamatory. Things haven't improved much since.
