Celebrities, both LGBT-identified and not, have been rightly called out for using slurs or terms that perpetuate dangerous stereotypes about LGBT people. And while some have defended this usage, claiming that words such as "F*g" or "tra**y" do not spur hate and harm, a new study is proving otherwise.

On Sunday, October 30, in Reno, Texas, Burke Burnett was stabbed repeatedly with a broken beer bottle and thrown onto a fire. At the same time, 26-year-old Burke, who is openly gay, was taunted with numerous anti-gay slurs. "I was hurt really badly that night, emotionally and physically, but I didn't lose my life, and that's the most important thing," said Burke. GLAAD has been working closely with Burke to help him share his story with the media.

Last month, GLAAD posted a Story To Watch about the murder of Waterloo, Iowa, teenager, Marcellus Richard Andrews. On Thursday, law enforcement arrested a suspect, 19-year-old Paris Akeem Anding, on charges of second degree murder.
