Why this is important
Spirit Day Ambassador Brittany McMillan, a Canadian from Vancouver, BC, came up with the idea for Spirit Day as a way to show support for LGBT young people who might be targeted by bullies, and to remember those victims of bullying whose lives were lost to suicide. GLAAD has been the driving force behind Spirit Day’s success in the media since its inception two years ago. GLAAD has inspired the media to share Spirit Day’s message far and wide, with millions upon millions of people throughout North America. QMUNITY provides LGBTQ teens with a safe space and any resources they might need, and can be a lifeline for someone being bullied. Egale Canada Human Rights Trust (ECHRT) is Canada's largest LGBT organization and works to protect LGBTQ young people from bullying and harassment.

What is Spirit Day?
Millions wear purple on Spirit Day as a sign of support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth and to speak out against bullying. Spirit Day was started in 2010 as a response to the young people who had taken their own lives. Observed annually, individuals, schools, organizations, corporations, media professionals and celebrities wear purple, which symbolizes spirit on the rainbow flag. Getting involved is easy -- participants are asked to simply "go purple" on October 17th as we work to create a world in which LGBT teens are celebrated and accepted for who they are. Learn more & go purple at www.glaad.org/spiritday.
