How are schools and GSAs participating in Spirit Day?
For Cabot High School, the brand new GSA is launching their first campaign with Spirit Day! In addition to purpling out the school, their Facebook and Twitter accounts, the GSA plans to take the momentum from Spirit Day to kick-start their anti-slur campaign.
The California State University Long Beach GSA is hosting flash mobs all over campus to celebrate Spirit Day and raise awareness!
Kamehameha High School's Pride Club is wearing purple and encouraging others to do so also. They will spread the word about the importance of taking a stand against bullying especially bullying that targets LGBTQ students.
Keyport High School in New Jersey has incorporated Spirit Day into the school's Spirit Week, making Thursday 'Wear Purple Day.' Additionally, the student Key Club will be selling purple ribbons to students with proceeds benefitting The Trevor Project and inviting students to learn more about bullying and suicide prevention. Students will also be asked to sign a pledge to stand up against bullying.
Loyola Marymount University LGBT Student Services Office will be passing out 500 purple shirts to students that read: I CARE. They have also asked that faculty and staff wear purple in honor of Spirit Day 2011.
New Paltz High School has an active GSA that will be spreading the word on Facebook, tweeting about Spirit Day and posting on Tumblr.
A New York GSA will be wearing purple, encouraging others to do so, hanging fliers around the school explaining what Spirit Day means, including triangles meaning safe zones, and spreading awareness.
At North Surrey Secondary School students have been postering about Spirit Day, sharing stories on the impact of bullying during morning announcements, and on Spirit Day will show GLAAD Spirit Day and It Gets Better videos. Additionally, the school dance team will flash mob "Born This Way" by Lady Gaga!
Northeast GSA is making announcements each morning during the week requesting the entire school wear purple on Oct. 20 to end bullying. Announcements will include short stories about bullying to raise awareness and motivate the school to participate.
Pitsford Mendon High School's GSA is organizing events in the school to raise awareness about Spirit Day and anti-LGBT bullying.
Palisades Park Jr./Sr. High School has asked students and faculty to wear purple for Spirit Day and to gather for a group photo to be posted on the school anti-bullying bulletin board and their website.
The GSA at Troy High School is planning to spread the word about wearing purple apparel on Spirit Day! In addition, a few officers will get to school early, and in front of the school media center, they will distribute purple duct tape "wristbands" for students to wear and support the cause. In each of the classes, they will ask the teacher for permission to have a one minute word with the class explaining Spirit Day and handing out duct tape wristbands for interested allies and supporters to wear. Left wrist, right, or both - it shows support and gets people asking what it's all about.
The University of Missouri chapters of Lamda Legal and Law Students for Reproductive Justice are teaming up to sponsor Spirit Day at Mizzou Law by encouraging students, faculty, and staff to "go purple" in support of LGBT acceptance.
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln LGBT Resource Center is spreading the word for everyone to wear purple! They are encouraging people to wear purple on Spirit Day as part of LGBTQA History Month Events and Programming at the University of NE-Lincoln. Also taking place on October 20 is a program being sponsored by the University Program Council (UPC): Real World LGBT Round Table. Our calendar of events for history month can be found at www.involved.unl.edu/lgbtqa.
The Ventura College GSA is hosting booths on the campus quad where they will be handing out purple ribbons and information on bullying in the hopes of raising awareness and engaging students in an open dialogue on discrimination and bullying on campus.
Western Wyoming Students are tabling on campus with purple ribbons and giving out information to raise awareness for Spirit Day. In addition, they will be filming an It Gets Better video.
Whitman College students are going purple all over campus!
What is Spirit Day?
Millions of Americans wear purple on Spirit Day as a sign of support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth and to speak out against bullying. Spirit Day was started in 2010 by teenager Brittany McMillan as a response to the young people who had taken their own lives. Observed annually on October 20, individuals, schools, organizations, corporations, media professionals and celebrities wear purple, which symbolizes spirit on the rainbow flag. Getting involved is easy -- participants are asked to simply "go purple" on October 20 as we work to create a world in which LGBT teens are celebrated and accepted for who they are. Learn more & go purple at www.glaad.org/spiritday.
