An investigation by The American Independent looking at companies with LGBT nondiscrimination policies who have donated funds to the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) revealed that UPS gave $167,000 to the BSA as of 2010. UPS has so far defended its donations, saying that the BSA’s anti-gay policy would not affect the company’s giving.
For UPS to continue supporting the BSA while touting the company’s LGBT-inclusive nondiscrimination policy that received a 100% approval rating from the Human Rights Campaign is contradictory. As Wahls asserts in a statement from Change.org, “The Boy Scouts are certainly worthy of significant corporate support, but not while the organization is upholding a discriminatory policy that bans some of the best and brightest gay youth and leaders from within our ranks.”
GLAAD president Herndon Graddick joined Wahls’ call for accountability, saying, "UPS has an opportunity to side with fairness and join other BSA Board Members, funders as well as hundreds of thousands of Americans in speaking out against this discriminatory policy. After losing so much support over the past several months, the BSA should follow other national youth organizations like the Girl Scouts of the USA, 4-H Club and Boys & Girls Club by ending discrimination against gay people."
Wahls recently called for Intel, which also gave to the BSA in 2010, to cease its donations, prompting the company to clarify that it hasupdated its donation policy to only fund organizations that vow not to discriminate based on sexual orientation, which would exclude the BSA. In 2010, Intel reportedly gave the Boy Scouts more than $700,000. GLAAD urges everyone to sign the petition and tell UPS to follow its own nondiscrimination policy and take a stand for equality.
