GLAAD observes second annual Bisexual Awareness Week
NEW YORK, NY – GLAAD, the nation's lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) media advocacy organization, today announced its participation in the second annual Bisexual Awareness Week 2015 (BiWeek) in conjunction with BiNet USA, America’s oldest advocacy organization for bisexual, pansexual, fluid, queer-identified and unlabeled people. BiWeek takes place from September 20th – 26th with the 23rd as official 'Celebrate Bisexuality Day.'
GLAAD co-led BiWeek with BiNet USA in 2014 to raise awareness of the issues faced by the bisexual community, including visibility. BiWeek will kick off with a bisexual community policy briefing at the White House on Monday, September 21, attended by GLAAD, which will include updates from administration officials and community leaders.
"Bisexual Awareness Week is a wonderful tool to increase the visibility of an often overlooked community," said Sarah Kate Ellis, CEO and President of GLAAD. "By taking time to focus on issues that this community faces, we can further accelerate acceptance of bisexuality."
GLAAD will be releasing original content all week long, including a video profiling out bisexual leaders Dr. Herukhuti, editor of Recognize: The Voices of Bisexual Men; Paul Nocera, facilitator of BiRequest; and Michelle Garcia, Identities editor at Mic. GLAAD is also partnering in a panel in Los Angeles to discuss the importance bisexual awareness. Featured will be comedian Ian Harvie, YouTubers RJ Aguilar and Connor Manning and Los Angeles Bi Task Force co-founder Dr. Mimi Hoang. For a listing of other events taking place across the country, visit bisexualweek.com/events/.
Those looking to get involved can participate in BiWeek by showing support on social media using #BiWeek and learn more about the celebration at glaad.org/biweek2015. GLAAD also offers a bevy of resources on bisexuality at the newly-launched glaad.org/bisexual as part of the organization's year-round commitment to bisexual issues. In 2013, GLAAD formally dropped its full name – the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation – as another sign of our ongoing commitment to the bisexual community.
