Welcome to GLAAD's MediaFocus: Transgender & Intersex Visibility Web Page. MediaFocus: Transgender & Intersex Visibility is an initiative of the Cultural Interest Media Project which focuses on the diversity of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community.

The Transgender & Intersex Visibility initiative helps GLAAD achieve its mission by focusing on and advocating for fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of transgender and intersex people in the media.

GLAAD consistently covers transgender and intersex issues also has a Language and Resource Guide for Media Professionals which includes a detailed section on transgender and intersex terminology and contact information for national organizations.

In January 2000, Cathy Renna, GLAAD's Director of Regional Media and Community Relations, along with colleagues from the gender advocacy group GenderPac, met with senior editors of The Associated Press (AP) Stylebook and Libel Manual to suggest changes in terminology regarding transgender and intersex issues. Since the manual is periodically revised by the AP, GLAAD suggested a new terminology which would help reporters cover transgender issues fairly and accurately.

Also, GLAAD is able to work transgender and intersex organizations and individuals to refine and expand their understanding of the media and skills needed to work with them by offering training interventions and and Outreach program. In coordination with local, state and regional organizations, GLAAD has conducted scores of successful trainings across the country to improve media coverage at the local level and beyond.

Like the other initiatives of the Cultural Interest Media Project, GLAAD's MediaFocus: Transgender & Intersex Visibility Web Page is an evolving, constantly updated resource. We encourage you to take an active role by telling the media how you feel about the portrayals of transgender and intersex people.

If you have questions, information, or comments about GLAAD's MediaFocus: Transgender and Intersex Visibility or if you want to get involved, please contact Monica Taher at taher@glaad.org.
