MTV's "True Life" on Coming Out
poc media program > mtv's "true life" on coming out

POC Media Program Note: This episode is about Joel, 19, an Asian American, telling his mother and father that he is gay. His father is supportive. His mother isn't. She says being gay is contagious - at least that's what the psychologist told her. This episode presented a fair, accurate and inclusive representation of what lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people of color encounter when they come out to their families. Some experience rejection because of a family's religious belief that being gay is a sin. Others endure homophobic comments because cultural attitudes and assumptions dehumanize LGBT people. It was a very compelling first-person story on Coming Out.
