On Morning Joe today, MSNBC anchor Thomas Roberts recalled how several Republican Party officials congratulated him on his marriage despite the party’s explicit platform opposition to same-sex marriages.

“[RNC Chairman] Reince Priebus, when I got engaged [in 2011], congratulated me at the White House Correspondents weekend,” Roberts recalled. “Last year, [RNC Communications Director] Sean Spicercongratulated me on getting married to my husband.”

It’s “odd,” Roberts noted, how the party and its leaders “go out and drumbeat” against marriage equality, and yet these two major figures seemed just fine with his marriage.

“Why congratulate me?” Roberts asked. “I didn’t bring it up. I didn’t say give me a congratulations. But they offered it.”
