On the heels of the Maine House of Representatives, the Maine Senate on Wednesday voted to send a ballot question about marriage equality directly to Maine voters. The Legislature could have required a public hearing on the issue, or even added a competing measure, such as civil unions, to the November ballot. What today's Senate vote means is that marriage for loving and committed same-sex couples is officially on the ballot for November and will be decided upon by the people of Maine.
