Lake County School Board members, in a narrow 3-2 vote, Monday night moved to keep middle-school campuses open to extracurricular clubs after two hours of comments mostly from supporters of a Gay-Straight Alliance at Carver Middle School in Leesburg.

Wearing red in a show of solidarity for the proposed gay-straight group, about three dozen supporters spoke before the board. The vote came as 14-year-old Bayli Silberstein, an eighth-grader at the school, continues her effort to establish the gay-straight club as a way to combat bullying.
