JK Rowling’s Novel For Grown-Ups, “The Casual Vacancy,” Includes Gay Storyline

Not that you weren’t going to pick it up anyway, but The Casual Vacancy, JK Rowling’s long-awaited novel for grown-up folks, features a gay subplot.
Out today from Little, Brown, the darkly comedic novel explores the untimely death of a parish council member in a small English town. “When Barry Fairweather dies unexpectedly in his early forties, the little town of Pagford is left in shock,” the synopsis reads. “The empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations?”
Among those revelations: A young woman comes out as a lesbian to her mother, who is “struck dumb.”
