Frank Mugisha: Uganda Parliament Adjourns, No Action on Anti-Gay Bill

“Ugandan Parliament will adjourn today Fri 14th until Feb 2013 without considering the Anti-Homosexuality Bill.” Frank Mugisha, executive director of Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG), tweeting earlier today. AllOut.org also released a statement today announcing that the Ugandan Parliament ended its 2012 session today without taking up the so-called “Kill the Gays” bill, which has repeatedly resurfaced since its 2009 introduction. As originally drafted, the bill called for executing those who committed “aggravated homosexuality” and would criminalize those who do not report homosexuals to authorities. The AllOut.org statement also quoted the organization’s executive director, Andre Banks: “This is a victory for Ugandans who have risked everything to demand fairness, justice and the ability to live openly and love who they choose.”
