A federal judge Thursday ruled in favor of a Lake County eighth-grader who was stymied for months in her effort to start a gay-straight club at Carver Middle School in Leesburg. The order settles a lawsuit against the Lake County school district brought by the American Civil Liberties Union on behalf of 14-year-old Bayli Silberstein this month. Bayli had been blocked from starting a Gay-Straight Alliance at her campus by a principal who took no action on her club application and School Board members who tried to create new policies to prevent her club from forming. Bayli, who is bisexual, hoped the club would combat bullying against gay students on campus.
