Colorado House Democrats pick Ferrandino for speaker, historic first for LGBT people

Jubilant Democrats nominated Mark Ferrandino as speaker of the House today, the first time in Colorado history a gay lawmaker has presided over the chamber.
In the history of the position, no leader has acknowledged being gay.
Democrats took back the majority in the House after Tuesday's election, and will have a 37-28 majority when the session opens in January. Republicans have been in control the last two years with a 33-32 majority.
The nomination becomes official Jan. 9, the opening day of the session, when both Republicans and Democrats will officially vote for speaker.
"I am so humbled by this nomination," an emotional Ferrandino said.
