Dharun Ravi sat largely expressionless for three weeks as friends testified in a courtroom here that he set up a webcam to spy on his roommate and another man as they had sex in his Rutgers dorm room in the days before the roommate, Tyler Clementi, committed suicide.

On Monday, Mr. Ravi rose and told the judge that he would not take the stand to tell his own version of what happened. Judge Glenn Berman asked if he had made his choice independently. “Yes, it’s my decision,” Mr. Ravi replied in a firm voice. It was the most he has said since the trial began.
