As the Supreme Court prepares to announce a landmark ruling on gay marriage, the issue has already transformed American politics -- including the life of a prominent Republican strategist who helped elect President George W. Bush. Ken Mehlman, who ran Bush's 2004 re-election campaign and later served as Republican Party chairman, is a once-closeted gay man who, as The New York Times reported, "is waging what could be his final campaign: to convince fellow Republicans that gay marriage is consistent with conservative values and good for their party." Mehlman's announcement about his sexual orientation created cross currents of ideological reaction.
