As lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people age, finding suitable retirement housing can be a unique challenge. Some facilities allow only married couples to live together, and many gay seniors fear a cold shoulder from staff or fellow retirees. But some retirement homes have begun catering specifically to LGBT seniors.
Sister Jeannine Gramick and Francis DeBernardo provide an argument in favor of marriage equality from a Catholic perspective. They write, "The opposition to marriage equality by the church’s hierarchy is well known, but in the quiet of their own consciences, millions of Catholics are arriving at different conclusions rooted deeply in the teachings of our faith. We support marriage equality, and we won’t forget the Catholic legislators and governors who have worked on behalf of justice for lesbian and gay couples."
MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell last night interviewed Republican Washington state Rep. Maureen Walsh, whose heartfelt testimony in favor of marriage equality went viral online. O'Donnell also spoke to Walsh's out lesbian daughter Shauna.
Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn (D) this week said he does not know if he would support proposed marriage equality legislation in the state. The governor said he wants to study the bill before he makes a decision.
