It’s been incredibly rewarding to serve as GLAAD’s Director of National News for nearly five years. During that time, I’ve had the honor of helping to elevate the voices of countless LGBT people and allies across the country. It’s my job to prep our community for high-level media appearances. Whether they go on The Oprah Winfery Show, CNN or any number of national programs, I help folks speak in their authentic voices, and share their personal stories. And when fair-minded people hear about their unique experiences, it helps move people towards understanding and acceptance. That’s the core of GLAAD’s mission.
It’s also my job to make sure national media outlets report about our lives in the most responsible way. When they miss the mark I jump into action, demand accountability and rally our members to stand up. This leads to public apologies, corrections and promises of improved future coverage. The pioneering activists who founded GLAAD stood up and said, “enough is enough,” to the defamation of the mid 1980’s. I stand on their shoulders and continue their legacy today.
Prior to my time with GLAAD I worked as a local and national journalist. Since I’ve been in the trenches as a reporter and producer I know how to help current producers and reporters in the most effective ways, getting them timely resources on tight deadlines to ensure their stories are well rounded and accurate. It’s pressure packed some days, but when I start to feel stressed I always think of something tennis great, Billie Jean King once said: “Pressure is a Privilege.”
On a personal note, I came out as a lesbian later in life and my journey to feeling confident in my own skin has taken a long time. Being from a conservative family that is still coming to grips with who I am can feel daunting at times. GLAAD has helped give me a voice by allowing me to give others a strong voice day after day. I’m now married to my partner of 11 years, Rainie Cole and blessed to have her constant love and support. I have a very good life with amazing friends and I’m proud to work for GLAAD.
