Dear Friend,

Equality and fairness took a great step forward this week when the California Supreme Court swept away discriminatory state laws prohibiting gay and lesbian couples from marrying.

I am very proud that GLAAD's media advocacy and anti-defamation work in California helps foster the cultural change that helps enable such a court ruling. To quote the decision:

"Furthermore, in contrast to earlier times, our state now recognizes that an individual's capacity to establish a loving and long-term committed relationship with another person and responsibly to care for and raise children does not depend upon the individual's sexual orientation, and, more generally, that an individual's sexual orientation - like a person's race or gender - does not constitute a legitimate basis upon which to deny or withhold legal rights."

"In contrast to earlier times, our state now recognizes…" Indeed.

  • GLAAD led the media launch for Let California Ring, a groundbreaking public education campaign to reach Californians undecided on the issue of same-sex marriage, reaching over 8 million people with the campaign's messages, and it was thrilling to see a GLAAD trained couple featured prominently in CNN's coverage of the California marriage decision, on message and looking great!
  • We trained over 200 advocates to effectively communicate the campaign's compelling messages through the media in California, in both English and Spanish.
  • We publicly challenged the anti-gay slurs by high profile people, transforming the situations as moments to educate the public about the defamation and discrimination the LGBT community faces.

But an effort is underway to alter California's state constitution to undo this momentous victory. The forces against us are well-organized, well-funded and dedicated to overturning the Supreme Court's decision in November. Our media advocacy and anti-defamation efforts are even more important now. We will be strong in resisting the intolerant backlash. But we can't do it without you.

The culture changing work of GLAAD is having an impact, the momentum is on our side and all who stand with us are on the right side of history. Together with legal and political organizations, LGBT and allied, with your support we will continue our march toward full equality.

Please join with us in celebrating the California marriage decision by giving as much as you can -- $500, $250, $75, or whatever your budget allows -- to support GLAAD's efforts to preserve that victory and to make our society one that respects the LGBT community. Media Advocacy and fighting defamation is changing hearts and minds. And when that happens, it doesn't make a bit of difference; it makes all the difference.

Thank you for your support.

In service,

Neil
