Job Summary

The Director of Communications reports to the Chief Communications Officer and directs GLAAD's internal and external communications to a wide variety of audiences, including media, the LGBTQ community, organization members and donors, corporate leaders, and the public at large. This position spearheads GLAAD's extensive media relations efforts, both proactive and reactive, and is responsible for cultivating a wide network of top-level media contacts. The Director of Communications must have a sharp sense for risk assessment as well as the ability to develop and articulate crisis strategies at a moment's notice. This position will be the arbiter of GLAAD's voice and messaging, and is responsible for providing internal and external shareholders with guidelines and best practices for talking about the organization, its mission, and issues affecting the LGBTQ community. Finally, this position will assist other departments in developing external messages, communications plans, and broader strategies to advance department goals and thus the organization's overall mission. This position will be located in GLAAD's New York City office.

Job Responsibilities

  • Works alongside GLAAD's Chief Communications Officer to develop, implement, and execute a long-term communications plan that supports goals set in GLAAD's overall strategic plan.
  • Spearheads the organization's day-to-day media relations, both proactive and reactive, including cultivating an extensive network of news contacts across media platforms; drafting press releases, media advisories, press statements, talking points, and opinion pieces; and prepping and staffing executive leadership for interviews, speaking engagements, and red carpet events.
  • Manages team, including external PR agencies, responsible for responding to breaking news items in real time, elevating GLAAD's visibility and reputation as a leading voice on LGBTQ issues.
  • Oversees all external-facing communications to ensure they are in-line with GLAAD's messaging and branding standards, including membership emails, social media posts, resources for media, organizational publications, and marketing materials.
  • Provides GLAAD's internal and external stakeholders with guidance and briefings on speaking about the organization's programmatic work, impact, and mission – ensuring cohesion in messaging across audiences.
  • Advises organizational partners, grassroots leaders, and corporate stakeholders on best-practices for talking strategically about LGBTQ issues, and serving as GLAAD's foremost expert on movement messaging and priorities.
  • Supervises and evaluates staff and interns assigned to department.
  • Prepares weekly progress reports, quarterly reviews, and other reports as requested.
  • Represents the organization within network of communications and PR professionals.
  • Completes other tasks as assigned.


  • BA/BS degree in Marketing, Public Relations or Communications with a minimum of five years' experience in a related field.
  • Two years' experience in a senior management position. REQUIRED
  • Expert communications skills, both written and spoken, across all media platforms.
  • Experience writing media releases, advisories, op-eds, and pitches.
  • Prior experience working with and already established network of high-level media contacts.
  • Experience managing staff and interns.
  • Experience in overseeing a budget.
  • Expertise in measuring and evaluating the effectiveness of media plans and coverage.
  • Computer and Internet literacy, including Microsoft Office Suite and Google Docs.
  • Willingness to travel.
  • Strong working knowledge of history and issues regarding LGBTQ issues and media representation.
  • Requires outstanding leadership skills and the ability to manage professional and support staff members as well as advise senior level management team.

The Director of Communications reports to the Chief Communications Officer and supervises support staff.


Salary is commensurate with experience.
