In the spring semester of 2011, Grace University, a Midwest Christian college in Omaha, Nebraska decided to expel Danielle Powell, simply because she is gay. After her expulsion, Powell says she was told that she would have to repay the $6,300 of tuition for the semester she wasn't allowed to finish.

At Cherry Knoll Elementary school in Traverse City, Michigan, a music teacher decided to remove the word 'gay' from a verse sung in the traditional Christmas carol "Deck the Halls" to stop students from giggling. The principal expressed disappointment with the teacher's decision, saying this was a teachable moment for respect and equal treatment.
