Arin Andrews and Katie Hill look like your average teenage couple in the throes of summer love, but their journey has been anything but average. Arin, 17, and Katie, 19, have both undergone gender confirmation surgeries and for the first time in their lives, say they’ve never been more comfortable together.
This past weekend, GLAAD learned that local Philadelphia media sensationalized and inaccurately reported on the murder of a trans woman of color, using the wrong name and pronouns and including irrelevant information about her past.
Nefertiti Jaquez who now works for the NBC affiliate in Philadelphia reported on an unfolding case in which Charles Sargent has been arrested for killing and dismembering transgender woman. The story about it misgendered the victim, without any attempt at balance in terms of finding anyone in the trans community who knew the victim.
More employers than ever provide at least some coverage for gender transitioning, and states are stepping up to ban clauses that allow private insurers to deny basic health coverage to transgender people. But most still scramble to pay for their care.
