Video: Naya Rivera and Cory Monteith Call for More Diversity on Television at the #glaadawards in New York

Last night Naya Rivera was joined by Glee co-star Cory Monteith to host the 23rd Annual GLAAD Media Awards in New York. Naya who is a GLAAD Media Awards hosting veteran started off the show by giving Cory a few pointers on how to work the crowd but also took the opportunity to thank her fans and call for more diversity on television.

Last night Dancing with the Stars contestant Carson Kressley brought home a GLAAD Media Award in the Outstanding Reality Program Category. Broadway and television star Cheyenne Jackson along with The Jersey Shore’s Vinny Guadagnino took the stage to present the category.

While riding the subway the other day, I was seated next to a young girl, maybe 8 or 9 years old, and her father. “Twenty-eighth Street is next. And then 23rd. And then 18th,” she told me. Apparently, even she could tell I wasn’t a New Yorker.

Then, as the train came to a stop at the station (sure enough, 28th Street), her attention was drawn to a gay couple who boarded holding hands. She quieted.

“Do those men love each other?” she asked her father.

This could be interesting.

ABC’s Gay Wednesdays

If you tuned in to ABC’s 9-10 p.m. EST comedy lineup last night, you saw a story about pumpkin hurling (“Modern Family”), followed by one about scavenger hunting (“Happy Endings”).

You saw something else, too: a tandem example of how much things have changed when it comes to network television’s incorporation of gay characters.

Kirk Cameron Responds to Critics

“I should be able to express moral views on social issues,” he said, “especially those that have been the underpinning of Western civilization for 2,000 years — without being slandered, accused of hate speech, and told from those who preach ‘tolerance’ that I need to either bend my beliefs to their moral standards or be silent when I’m in the public square.”
