The NBA has fined Roy Hibbert $75,000 after the Indiana Pacers center used a gay slur in one answer and a profanity in another during his news conference Saturday following Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals.
The Benedictine College Ravens forward, Jallen Messersmith became the first active college basketball player to come out as gay following the rise of out athletes from pro and collegiate sports. His Mormon Church family provided support, but the religious leaders anti-LGBT attitudes caused him to leave his childhood church. Messersmith is now comfortable with his sexuality after a dark past of bullying. After being home-schooled, he entered high school and began to use his experience of being bullied to fuel something positive – basketball.
On the heels of NBA player Jason Collins' announcement earlier this month that he is gay -- making him the first active team athlete in a major American sport to declare such -- we have another basketball player announcing the same.
