More and more competitors make the decision to come out which positively impacts visibility of LGBT athletes in all sports and on all levels of competition. As athletes decide to come out, it is important that they are equipped with strategies on how to do so most successfully.
GLAAD recognized several out athletes on stage at Saturday's 25th Annual GLAAD Media Awards at the historic Waldorf Astoria in New York including Derrick Gordon, Darren Young, Blake Skjellerup and Jessica Aguilar during the Ketel One-sponsored toast for those forwarding equality.
In 2011, Jaiyah Saelua of American Samoa became the first openly transgender person to play in a FIFA World Cup qualifier. Her performance in the match was instrumental to breaking the American Samoan team's losing streak by clearing a goal-bound ball from the opposing team and preserving their first ever win.
