GLAAD worked closely with Imani Rashid, author, community organizer and African-American Lesbians United for Social Change (AALUSC) board member, as well as Huffington Post Gay Voices and Black Voices to highlight the significance of Kwanzaa for many lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender African Americans.
GLAAD asked director Dee Rees some questions about the film and her own journey as an out African-American lesbian.
This week, Salon.com teamed up with New America Media to run a series of coming out stories by LGBT youth of color and LGBT immigrant youth. Titled "Pariah Personals," the series is inspired by the recently released film "Pariah," a coming-of-age story about an African American teen named Alike, who is embracing her identity as a lesbian.
Dee Dee Pearson, a transgender woman living in Kansas City, Missouri, was murdered this holiday weekend. The transgender community in Kansas City is mourning this tragic loss, and friends and neighbors have already begun leaving tokens of love and support outside of Dee Dee’s home where she was shot Saturday night.
This week, Huffington Post Gay Voices featured a piece by Kylar Broadus, a transgender advocate, lawyer, board member of the National Black Justice Coalition, and founder of the Trans People of Color Coalition, reflecting on West Hollywood's 13th annual Transgender Day of Remembrance and discussing the disproportionate rates of violence and discrimination against transgender people of color, both locally and throughout the country.
