As momentum builds in Congress for LGBT equality, locally, in New York, nearly 100 local interfaith leaders have signed a letter to Senator Charles Schumer to include equal protection for LGBT families in immigration reform legislation.
“In the last two weeks we have seen an unprecedented amount of senators step forward in favor of equal marriage rights for same sex couples,” said Alan van Capelle, CEO of Bend the Arc. “They’ve talked about their journey and support…this immigration battle is the first opportunity to demonstrate their support.”
During an interview on CNBC's Squawk Box host Joe Kernen challenged GOP House Majority Leader Eric Cantor on his opposition to marriage equality for gay and lesbian couples. Kernen pointed out the Republican Party's lack of alignment as an increasing number of conservative voters support equality for gay and lesbian people.
Two instances of anti-transgender murders occurred in Orlando, Florida and Baltimore, Maryland over the last 24 hours. Both were transgender women of color. And when the media doesn't tell their story correctly, it perpetuates misleading stereotypes about transgender people.
Florida Sen. Bill Nelson reversed his opposition to gay marriage on Thursday, joining a swell of moderate Democrats to do so recently as public support for gay marriage has grown.
In a statement to the Tampa Bay Times editorial board, Nelson wrote:
"It is generally accepted in American law and U.S. society today '... that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.' I believe that. The civil rights and responsibilities for one must pertain to all.
Tony Zamazal, a trans student at Spring High School in Houston, will be allowed to wear a dress to prom after the national and Texas ACLU got involved following reports in February that Zamazal's request was denied, the ACLU reports:
"Like every other student, Tony deserves to feel comfortable and be herself at prom," said Amanda Goad, staff attorney with the ACLU Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender Project. "We're glad that Spring ISD has affirmed Tony's First Amendment rights."
On Easter Sunday, antigay activists and religious leaders in Uganda held a rally to launch the "Say No to Homosexuality" campaign, led by Pastor Solomon Male and the Reverend Thomas Musoke. The rally was held in Namataba Village, just outside the gravesite of slain gay activist David Kato. Kato's mother was reportedly inside the home and saw the entire rally.
