Today at the U.S. Embassy in London, Secretary of State John Kerry said the U.S. will immediately begin treating visa applications from same-sex couples in the same manner as those from heterosexual couples.
The visas will be issued to couples who were married in a jurisdiction that legally recognizes marriages of same-sex couples, even if the visa application is filed in a location that does not recognize those marriages.
Sen. Jeff Merkley will introduce the resolution. The measure will call on the International Olympic Committee to oppose Russia’s anti-LGBT propaganda law and protect athletes and spectators from discrimination at the Winter Olympics.
The International Olympic Committee said for the time being it is standing by reassurances that athletes and visitors attending the 2014 Sochi Games in Russia will not be affected by anti-gay legislation.
