For years, anti-gay epithets and sentiments in rap have largely been accepted, along with its frequent misogyny and violence, as part of the hip-hop culture – a culture that has been slow to change, even as gays enjoy more mainstream acceptance, particularly in entertainment. But while perhaps glacial, a shift appears to be on the horizon.
Ben Gibbard, the singer best known for his work with Death Cab for Cutie, has joined author Dave Eggers and music manager Jordan Kurland’s efforts to reelect President Obama.
His reason? President Obama supports marriage equality. Here’s a bit of Gibbard’s testimonial, as told to his lesbian sister and her wife’s future grandchildren, who of course can’t envision a time when marriage equality wasn’t accepted:
