Across the United States, millions of seniors are getting ready to walk across the stage in graduation ceremonies. This time can bittersweet for transgender students. Two instances of transgender students, in different parts of the country, have reminded us that schools can often fail to support transgender students and treat them with respect.

The Santa Fe City Council has voted in favor of a resolution which encourages city clerks to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
Carla Hale, the Catholic school teacher who was fired for being gay, has stated that he intends to fight to keep her job. Carla was a physical education teacher at Bishop Watterson High School for 19 years. After her mother died, the obituary in the local paper listed Carla and her partner as survivors.
