For some in the the Vassar College community, it was a teachable moment they hope was a spark for further discussions about gay rights and acceptance.
Four members of the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan., came to the Town of Poughkeepsie on Thursday to protest Vassar College’s support of the lesbian, bisexual, gay and transsexual community. They were met by hundreds of Vassar College students, faculty and other community members in support for gay rights.
In New York, great strides have been made in protecting the civil rights of the gay and lesbian community, like the legalization of same-sex marriage. However, if you ask any of the thousands of transgender New Yorkers, they will tell you that they still face severe discrimination and bullying in their workplaces, and even threats of violence in their communities.
