Nearly two-thirds of Americans believe legalized same-sex marriage in the U.S. is inevitable, according to a study by LifeWay Research, a Nashville polling firm with ties to the Southern Baptist Convention.
A day after Speaker Michael Madigan pronounced the gay marriage bill 12 votes short, a group pushing the issue tried to recapture momentum by announcing support from seven Illinois Democratic congressmen --- even though they don’t get to vote in Springfield.
"I'm announcing today a change of heart," Ohio Sen. Rob Portman said Thursday in announcing his support for the right of same-sex couples to marry — a change he said came about after his son came out to him.
As the Boy Scouts of America surveys pack leaders about gay scouts, CNN welcomed Ohio mom Jennifer Tyrrell to speak about this latest development and what it means for a possible end to the ban on gay scouts and leaders.
"You're looking at what is the best course societywide to get you the optimal result in the widest variety of cases. That often is not open to people in individual cases. Certainly adoption in families headed, like Chief Roberts' family is, by a heterosexual couple, is by far the second-best option," said John Eastman, chairman of the National Organization for Marriage.
