A round of applause for GLAAD's Summer 2013 interns! Talented thinkers, writers, and activists, these interns joined the GLAAD team in June and have since helped develop our campaigns, events, and programs. As they head back to school in the fall, we wanted to thank these young leaders for their incredible work.
A word that haunts us all
In 1962 boxer Emile Griffith was in the ring against Benny Paret, when he seemed to explode with anger and pummeled his opponent with such force that, after getting knocked out, Paret died of his injuries. It was eventually revealed that before that some time before the fight Paret had called Griffith a "maricón."
Take Action: Help University of North Carolina students protect gender-neutral housing
On Friday, August 9, the University of North Carolina's Board of Governors will vote on a policy that would ban gender-neutral housing at all seventeen UNC campuses, and threaten the safety and well-being of trans and gender non-conforming students living there. This policy was previously approved by a "Governance Committee" and is moving on to a final vote before the full board.
South Carolina University student removed from work-study position for being gay
Stephen Lovegrove, a rising junior at Charleston Southern University, was informed this past Monday that he had lost his work-study position a resident advisor (RA) at his school after he began posting on the internet about being gay and Christian.
