The hours and days following Chelsea’s announcement were riddled with news stories, press statements and organizations attempting to place Chelsea’s experience as a transgender woman within the context of other transgender people in prison.
A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request for individual complaints filed by transgender immigrants held in U.S. federal immigration detention and processing facilities has yielded a total of 186 individuals since 2008.
The complaints of most of these people--169--are described in documents released by the U.S. Office of the Inspector General (OIG) through the FOIA. Seventy of them allege sexual assault or rape and 34 reported being segregated in isolation for indeterminate periods of time. Harassment and assault also played a role in 24 of these cases.
Today GLAAD and over 40 organizations call on journalists to improve their coverage of transgender people following Private Chelsea Manning's statement that she is female and using the name Chelsea and female pronouns. The immediate news coverage, as well as the follow up analysis, brought into sharp focus the national news media's frequently inaccurate and uninformed coverage of transgender people.
The 23rd annual Southern Comfort Conference (SCC), a four-day symposium focused on supporting and celebrating the lives of transgender people, will will be held September 4-8 in Atlanta, Georgia. SCC brings together transgender and allied vendors, authors, entertainers and leaders for seminars, on-site activities, and planned day trips centered on transgender people and issues.
'I want to caution you not to assume that you have fully solved the problem by the enactment of this law,' Lively wrote, according to the site BuzzFeed. 'Few political agendas in the history of mankind have marshaled the tenacity and resolve of the homosexualist movement.'
'Its activists are driven by an implacable militancy and a zeal to advance their own self-serving interests that rivals even the most fanatical religious cult,' he added.
