In all parts of the world today--Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR)--people are gathering in honor of lives lost to anti-trans violence and discrimination. This is the 15th year that the annual, international event has formally taken place.
Gwendolyn Smith, the founder of the Transgender Day of Remembrance, has written an essay for the Huffington Post for the 15th anniversary for the Transgender Day of Remembrance. She notes that since the murder of Rita Hester, hundreds of others of transgender people have been victims of violence and murder. In 2013 alone, over 200 transgender people were murdered...that we know of.
Last year, GLAAD examined the previous ten years of transgender inclusive television episodes, and found that more than half of those tracked were either negative or outright defamatory. Things haven't improved much since.
