Ecuadorean activists protest against homophobia and sexual discrimination in Quito on May 17, 2005. The country of 15.8 million people has at least 80 unlicensed drug and alcohol rehab clinics, many that are also used for anti-gay conversion therapy, Health Minister Carina Vance, who is openly gay, said, adding that the country is cracking down on such practices.
Russia's Queer Nation today issued a press release which claims gay and lesbian activists in Russia support the recent dumping of Russian vodka. According to a statement included in the group's release, those activists also support taking things a step further: boycott all Russian products - including the upcoming Winter Olympic Games in Sochi.
Two cases surfaced this week revealing proof of a shift in attitudes toward LGBT individuals in the world of sports. Rutgers Athletic Director, Julie Hermann, openly revealed she was gay in her biography on Rutgers' official website. Meanwhile, the basketball coach of Saunders High School in Yonkers, New York, came out to his players and the nation by telling his inspirational testimony of coming out.
The report and video come from Spectrum Human Rights Alliance, an LGBT advocacy group in Eastern Europe. The attacks came very shortly after President Vladimir Putin signed a series of blatantly anti-gay laws. These laws have been the subject of controversy the world over, especially surroundingthe 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi.
