Missouri Hospital Incident Highlights Need for Awareness and Training on LGBT Health Protections

This looks like it could be another example where new policies protecting LGBT health rights are not promoted as widely as needed. Obama’s presidential order from nearly two years ago clearly said any hospital who wanted to get Medicaid or Medicare payments must treat same-sex partners as family. Later clarifications even went further, making sure hospitals went out of their way to allow patients to designate partners who would have powers beyond simply visitation.

LGBTQ Inclusive Immigration Reform

I have been fighting for the full inclusion of LGBTQ voices in immigration reform since 2008 along side many powerful undocuqueer people. We have gone a long way and we still have much to accomplish so our movements can be united. Needless to say, for us in GetEQUAL, immigration reform is needed and it is a moral imperative for our country. This legislative battle has become a focal point in our organizing because of the lived experience of some of our leaders, including myself.

Man no longer allowed to visit husband at KC hospital

A Lee’s Summit man is fighting a restraining order that he says was issued against him after he says he was arrested for refusing to leave the bedside of his sick partner. Roger Gorley went to visit his partner, Allen at Research Medical Center, 2316 E. Meyer Blvd., Tuesday afternoon.

Gay man delivers Catholic diocese over 18,000 signatures, diocese refuses to meet

Nicholas Coppola, the gay man who was stripped of his involvement with his local Roman Catholic parish, delivered 18,603 signatures to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rockville Centre, requesting to be restored to full engagement with his local parish. The signatures were gathered through the social justice organization, Faithful America in less than one week after launching the campaign.

DC shelter sued for rejecting trans women

A privately operated shelter for homeless women funded by the D.C. government is violating the D.C. Human Rights Act by refusing to admit transgender women unless they provide “documentation” of a legal name change or gender reassignment surgery, according to separate complaints against the facility by two transgender women, as reported earlier this week by the Washington Blade.
