Prom Project: Submit Your Story!

While prom is meant to be a joyous occasion, many students experience difficulty joining the celebration because of the discrimination they face, just for being who they are. Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students have often bravely asserted themselves and their identities at the prom, asking to bring dates of the same sex, and/or seeking to dress in ways that reflect their gender identities and expressions. Sometimes those assertions are met with support and love from the community. Sometimes they are met with rejection.  In both instances, more experiences of LGBT students need to be shared.

GLAAD is calling on high school students around the country to submit their stories about prom and help raise awareness in the media of the struggles and triumphs that young people meet when living authentically. Students could talk about acceptance from school administrators and attending prom as they wanted, discuss discrimination they faced on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity and expression, or simply share a story around being an LGBT-identified young person at prom. GLAAD will be featuring several prom stories on our blog, and a few may get elevated in the media.
