More than 1,500 New Yorkers gathered today in Manhattan to mourn the death of a 32 year-old gay man, who was shot down on Friday just blocks away from the historic Stonewall Inn in an apparent act of anti-gay bias.
LGBT Religion News Summary for January 11, 2012
GLAAD's Religion, Faith & Values program works to elevate LGBT-affirming voices of faith in mainstream, regional, and community media. To find out more, visit www.glaad.org/faith. For complete religion and faith updates, be sure to subscribe to GLAAD's LGBT Religion News Summary via our online registration form. We welcome suggestions at faith@glaad.org.
It is our first Religion News Summary since mid-December. You will note a few 2011 Year in Review” posts, including one from Believe Out Loud. We also saw several thought pieces about the LGBT perspective on religious observances, including Hanukkah and Three Kings Day (in both English and Spanish!).
Since mid-December, a lot of Roman Catholic news has taken place. Most notable were the comments of Cardinal Francis George of Chicago, in which he compared the LGBT community to the Ku Klux Klan. You will need to read the links in order, as the saga unfolded before Christmas, when he initially made the comments, to this week when he issued an apology. Other Roman Catholic news broke in Minnesota, Connecticut, Spain, and even from the Vatican itself!
It also appears that LGBT religious stories will be a major part of politics this spring. As the Republican primary continues, we will see more stories about how candidates view the relationship between religion and LGBT people.
Thanks for your suggestions, and please continue to forward and subscribe to faith@glaad.org.
