More than 1,500 New Yorkers gathered today in Manhattan to mourn the death of a 32 year-old gay man, who was shot down on Friday just blocks away from the historic Stonewall Inn in an apparent act of anti-gay bias.
Today Show Wedding Contest Application Needs an Update to Include Same-Sex Couples
This morning the blog, Good As You pointed out an important issue NBC's "Today Show" needs to address in its Modern Day Wedding Contest. While eligible same-sex couples can apply for the contest the application form only lists "bride" and "groom" as the options for couples to choose.
We sincerely thank Good As You for bringing this to our attention. GLAAD has reached out to the Today Show and asked the program to change the application. We also sent them several LGBT inclusive options including an example from the New York Times' wedding announcement application page. GLAAD was instrumental in persuading the New York Times to open it's wedding announcement pages to same-sex couples back in 2002. You can read more about our "Announcing Equality" campaign here. Since we began "Announcing Equality," over a thousand newspapers across the United States now accept wedding announcements from same-sex couples.
We'll keep you posted on the Today Show's response.
