The anti-LGBT “Torah Declaration on Homosexuality” endorsed by ultra-Orthodox Rabbi Shmuel Kamenetsky is just one of many voices in the Orthodox Jewish community speaking out about LGBT people. Although Rabbi Kamenetsky claims to have about 130 signatures from other rabbis and health professionals on his document, his view is far from the only one held among his community.
Yesterday marked a historic moment in lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender history as the Obama Administration expressed its commitment to ensuring the human rights of all people, including LGBT people.
Last Thursday, the Global Post told the heartbreaking story of a Ugandan gay couple, Alex and Michael, who fled to Kenya to escape anti-gay persecution and are living in a refugee camp. LGBT people around the world face extraordinary amounts of violence and discrimination like Michael and Alex have, much of which is sanctioned by law.
