U.S. Secretary of Labor Issues Statement on Transgender Day of Remembrance

Today, the United States Secretary of Labor, Hilda L. Solis, issued a statement about the upcoming Transgender Day of Remembrance. “I am proud to stand and be counted as an ally to the transgender community and to every person and family impacted by anti-transgender violence,” she says. “On this day of remembrance, as we pause to reflect on the lives that have been lost, we renew our commitment to an America that celebrates and values every person.”

In her statement, Secretary Solis also notes that the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and the National Center for Transgender Equality joined her at the U.S. Department of Labor this year to present their comprehensive study on anti-transgender discrimination, “Injustice at Every Turn: A Report of the National Transgender Discrimination Survey.” Commenting on the study’s striking findings, she emphasized that more than 90% of transgender people experience harassment and mistreatment in the workplace, and that this is unacceptable. "And while my department focuses on the nation's workforce,” she added, “I am equally troubled by the experiences of transgender people in their homes and in our schools and hospitals that promise to shelter, educate and heal.”

GLAAD applauds Secretary Solis for speaking out against anti-transgender discrimination and for recognizing the importance of the Transgender Day of Remembrance.
